Toyota has announced that they have reached an agreement with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for joint studies of "manned, pressurized rover that employs fuel cell electric vehicle technologies."
.
The proposed 6-wheel rover will be designed to drive over "complex terrain with craters, cliffs, and hills." as well as maintain safe conditioned for its 2 to 4 member crew against harsh "radiation and temperature conditions " on the surface of the moon. The proposed pressurized rover will be designed to travel more than 10,000km. To put that in perspective, that's more than the distance traveled by the Apollo 17 lunar rover, which was driven for 35.7 kilometers on the lunar surface.
.
JAXA Vice President Koichi Wakata said; "Manned, pressurized rovers will be an important element supporting human lunar exploration, which we envision will take place in the 2030s. We aim at launching such a rover into space in 2029."
